🧛 MTC ABHARTACH – 47 MILES

DAY 10 OF MOUNT TO COAST MIZMAL® 2027

Sunday 16th May 2027 | 47 Miles

BEWARE THE ABHARTACH – THE VAMPIRE OF IRISH LEGEND!

Some legends refuse to die.

And some creatures refuse to stay buried!

Deep within the darker corners of Irish folklore lurks the terrifying tale of Abhartach, a sinister chieftain said to have risen from his grave to terrorise the living.

Unlike the charming Gancanagh of Day 9, Abhartach offers no irresistible smile or enchanting promises.

His legend is one of death, resurrection and an insatiable thirst for blood!

And on Sunday 16th May 2027, we’re bringing this chilling character to life with the Mount to Coast Abhartach, Day 10 of our extraordinary 14-day MizMal® adventure.

🩸 47 MILES – THE LEGEND RISES AGAIN!

The MTC Abhartach presents another formidable ultramarathon challenge, covering approximately 47 miles through the magnificent landscapes of western Ireland.

For competitors undertaking the complete MizMal® challenge, this marks their tenth consecutive day of ultra running.

Nine days completed.

Hundreds of miles already conquered.

And still the journey north continues!

By now, tired legs, aching muscles and accumulated fatigue will be familiar companions.

But just like the legendary Abhartach, our runners must summon the determination to rise again!

💀 YOU CAN’T KEEP A GOOD ULTRARUNNER DOWN!

According to folklore, Abhartach repeatedly returned from the grave, despite attempts to put an end to his reign of terror.

Our competitors will need a similar refusal to surrender.

When the alarm sounds on the morning of Day 10, getting out of bed might feel like a challenge in itself!

But another start line awaits, another extraordinary Irish landscape beckons, and another bespoke finisher’s medal is waiting to be earned.

For standalone competitors, the MTC Abhartach offers the opportunity to tackle a challenging 47-mile ultramarathon and experience the atmosphere, support and camaraderie of MizMal®.

🏅 TEN DAYS. TEN LEGENDS. ONE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURE!

For those tackling the complete journey from Mizen Head to Malin Head, successfully finishing the Abhartach means reaching a remarkable milestone.

TEN CONSECUTIVE ULTRAMARATHONS COMPLETED. JUST FOUR MORE TO GO!

For standalone runners, it means conquering 47 miles and earning a place among the finishers of one of Ireland’s most unusual mythology-inspired ultramarathons.

🧛 RISE AGAIN. RUN AGAIN. CONQUER THE ABHARTACH!

The legendary Abhartach may have been impossible to keep in his grave, but our competitors have something even more powerful.

Determination.

Resilience.

And the irresistible desire to reach another finish line.

47 MILES. ONE UNDEAD LEGEND. ONE EXTRAORDINARY IRISH ULTRA.

🧛 MEET THE ABHARTACH – THE VAMPIRE OF IRISH LEGEND

🩸 SOME LEGENDS REFUSE TO STAY BURIED!

Long before vampires became the stuff of Hollywood horror films, Ireland had its own terrifying tales of the undead.

And among the most sinister was the legend of Abhartach.

According to Irish folklore, Abhartach was a cruel and powerful chieftain who ruled over his people with fear and intimidation.

But his reign of terror didn't end with his death.

In fact, that was only the beginning!

💀 THE CHIEFTAIN WHO ROSE FROM THE GRAVE

The legend tells of Abhartach, a feared chieftain whose wickedness eventually led to his downfall.

After his death, he was buried in the traditional manner.

But the following day, something extraordinary happened.

Abhartach returned from the grave!

Rather than resting peacefully, the undead chieftain appeared among his people and demanded blood to sustain his unnatural existence.

Terrified villagers sought help, and Abhartach was killed and buried once more.

Yet still he returned.

No matter how many times he was defeated, the sinister figure refused to remain among the dead.

⚔️ HOW DO YOU BURY SOMETHING THAT WON'T STAY DEAD?

In one well-known version of the legend, the warrior Catháin was called upon to confront the undead chieftain.

After seeking advice, he learned that ordinary weapons and burial methods would not be enough.

Abhartach had to be defeated with a weapon made from yew wood and buried upside down, with measures taken to prevent his return.

Only then, according to the tale, could his terrifying reign finally be brought to an end.

The story has been associated with a burial site near Slaghtaverty in County Londonderry, where local folklore preserves the memory of the mysterious Abhartach.

🦇 IRELAND'S ORIGINAL VAMPIRE?

Abhartach's story bears striking similarities to the vampire legends that later became famous throughout Europe.

A creature returning from the grave.

An unnatural thirst for blood.

And special measures required to prevent the dead from rising again.

Some writers have suggested that the Abhartach legend may have influenced the development of vampire stories, including those associated with Bram Stoker's Dracula.

However, a direct connection to Dracula has never been established.

What remains is a wonderfully sinister piece of Irish folklore — and the perfect inspiration for a MizMal® ultramarathon!

🏃 RISE AGAIN FOR DAY 10!

On Sunday 16th May 2027, Abhartach lends his name to Day 10 of our extraordinary Mount to Coast MizMal® adventure.

For competitors undertaking the complete fourteen-day challenge, the comparison is rather appropriate.

After nine consecutive ultramarathons, the body may be begging for rest.

The legs may feel lifeless.

And getting out of bed might require something approaching supernatural intervention!

But just like the legendary Abhartach, our runners must rise again.

Another start line.

Another 47 miles.

Another opportunity to demonstrate extraordinary determination.

🧛 THE UNDEAD MAY RISE – BUT SO DO ULTRARUNNERS!

The legend of Abhartach is a tale of a creature that simply refused to stay down.

And although our competitors have rather more honourable intentions, they'll need that same relentless determination to conquer Day 10.

47 MILES. ONE TERRIFYING LEGEND. ONE UNFORGETTABLE IRISH ULTRA.

💀 RISE FROM YOUR BED. FACE THE CHALLENGE. CONQUER THE ABHARTACH!
