MTC Bodach
19th May 2027

Wednesday 19th May 2027
38 Miles | County Donegal, Ireland
Welcome to the Mount to Coast Bodach, Day 13 of our extraordinary fourteen-day MizMalĀ® adventure across Ireland.
By now, our full MizMalĀ® competitors will have completed twelve consecutive ultramarathons, conquered twelve legendary challenges and pushed their physical and mental endurance to extraordinary limits.
But Ireland’s ancient mythology has one more formidable character waiting before the final day’s journey to Malin Head.
THE BODACH!
Deep within Irish and Scottish folklore lurks the Bodach, a mysterious figure whose name is associated with an old man, a rustic or a frightening supernatural presence.
Sometimes portrayed as a fearsome old creature, sometimes as a shadowy spirit of the night, the Bodach has long featured in tales designed to send shivers down the spine.
And what better character to inspire the penultimate stage of our MizMalĀ® adventure?
After twelve consecutive days of ultrarunning, our competitors may already be feeling a little ancient themselves!
But there’s no time to surrender to tired legs.
THE BODACH IS WAITING!
Starting in Ballybofey, competitors will embark on another demanding 38-mile ultramarathon through County Donegal.
For standalone runners, this is a fantastic opportunity to experience the challenge, camaraderie and atmosphere of a Mount to Coast MizMalĀ® event.
For our full fourteen-day warriors, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Every mile brings them closer to the northernmost finish of their incredible Irish adventure.
And when they complete the Bodach?
THIRTEEN CONSECUTIVE ULTRAMARATHONS WILL BE BEHIND THEM!
Just one final day will stand between them and the ultimate MizMalĀ® finish line at Malin Head.
Every successful MTC Bodach finisher will receive a bespoke medal celebrating this legendary character from Irish folklore.
For our full MizMalĀ® competitors, it will be the thirteenth daily medal in an extraordinary collection.
Fourteen days.
Fourteen mythological legends.
Fourteen opportunities to discover just how far determination can take you.
And for those who successfully complete the entire MizMalĀ® journey, the exclusive overall finisher’s medal awaits.
Thirteen may be considered unlucky by some.
But for our MizMalĀ® competitors, Day 13 represents something very different.
COURAGE. ENDURANCE. PERSEVERANCE.
After hundreds of miles and twelve consecutive ultramarathons, the finish line at Malin Head is almost within touching distance.
But first, there’s an old adversary to overcome.
38 MILES. ONE FEARSOME BODACH. ONE EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT.

Deep within the folklore of Ireland and Scotland lurks a mysterious character known as the Bodach.
But who exactly is this strange and sometimes terrifying figure?
The word Bodach comes from the Gaelic tradition and is commonly associated with an old man, a rustic or a gruff, disagreeable character.
However, in traditional folklore, the Bodach can be something far more unsettling!
Depending on the story, he may appear as a mysterious old man, a frightening supernatural being or a shadowy figure whose appearance is enough to send a chill down the spine.
OLD, MYSTERIOUS AND NOT NECESSARILY FRIENDLY!
Sounds like the perfect character to meet after twelve consecutive ultramarathons!
In some traditions, the Bodach takes on the role of a frightening figure associated with darkness and the unknown.
Stories of the Bodach an Chóta Lachtna, sometimes translated as the Old Man of the Drab Coat, feature a mysterious supernatural figure whose extraordinary abilities make him far more than an ordinary elderly traveller.
Elsewhere in Gaelic folklore, the name Bodach has been associated with frightening figures used in tales told to children.
Like many characters from ancient oral traditions, his appearance and behaviour change depending on who is telling the story.
One thing remains certain.
YOU WOULDN'T NECESSARILY WANT TO MEET HIM ON A DARK, LONELY ROAD!
Not every Bodach is simply a creature to be feared.
In some stories, the apparently ordinary old man possesses remarkable strength, cunning or supernatural abilities.
Appearances can be deceptive.
And that makes the Bodach a particularly fitting character for Day 13 of Mount to Coast MizMalĀ®.
After twelve consecutive days of ultrarunning, our competitors may be moving a little more slowly.
Their legs may ache.
Their bodies may be exhausted.
And they may feel as though they've aged several years in less than a fortnight!
But beneath that tired exterior lies something remarkable.
STRENGTH. RESILIENCE. AND AN UNBREAKABLE WILL TO CONTINUE!
On Wednesday 19th May 2027, our competitors will face the MTC Bodach, a challenging 38-mile ultramarathon beginning in Ballybofey, County Donegal.
For standalone runners, it's an opportunity to take on a demanding ultra inspired by one of Gaelic folklore's most intriguing characters.
But for those attempting the complete fourteen-day MizMalĀ® challenge, the Bodach represents something far greater.
THE PENULTIMATE TEST!
Twelve consecutive ultramarathons will already be behind them.
Hundreds of miles will have been covered.
Countless challenges will have been overcome.
And now, just two days remain, including this one.
The Bodach may be ancient, mysterious and fearsome, but he has never encountered anything quite like a determined MizMalĀ® competitor!
By this stage of the event, physical strength alone will no longer be enough.
Mental resilience, experience, patience and sheer determination will play an enormous part in reaching the finish line.
Every step will matter.
Every mile will be earned.
And every competitor who conquers the Bodach will have achieved something extraordinary.
THIRTEEN CONSECUTIVE ULTRAMARATHONS COMPLETED!
Just one final challenge will remain.
The journey to Malin Head.
The Bodach reminds us that appearances can be deceptive.
An old man may possess extraordinary powers.
And an exhausted ultrarunner may still have the strength to achieve the seemingly impossible.
So when the legs are tired, the muscles ache and the finish line still seems a long way away, remember the lesson of the Bodach.
THERE MAY BE MORE STRENGTH LEFT INSIDE YOU THAN YOU EVER IMAGINED!

Inishowen Gateway Hotel, Buncrana.
Another 38 miles of determination, endurance and adventure.
The landscapes of Donegal provide a wonderful setting for this penultimate challenge, but competitors should not underestimate the demands of the distance.
After all, the Bodach is no ordinary old man!
In Gaelic folklore, the Bodach is often portrayed as an elderly, mysterious or sometimes frightening figure.

By now, our full-event competitors may be looking a little weather-beaten themselves!
Their legs will have covered hundreds of miles.
Their bodies will have endured twelve consecutive ultramarathons.
And their determination will have been tested time and time again.
Yet beneath the tired exterior lies something remarkable.
THE STRENGTH TO KEEP GOING!
Competitors will benefit from supported checkpoints along the official route, providing opportunities to replenish food and fluids.
Good nutrition, sensible pacing and efficient checkpoint stops will be essential.
The route will be navigated using the official GPX file, which will be supplied approximately four weeks before the event.
Competitors will also be provided with GPS tracking devices, allowing organisers to monitor their progress and supporters to follow the adventure.
Detailed checkpoint locations, distances and What3words references will be provided in the Route Data section.
As with the other MizMalĀ® daily ultramarathons, competitors must maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph, including time spent at checkpoints.
Based on the advertised distance of 38 miles, this equates to approximately 9 hours and 30 minutes.
The final maximum race time and checkpoint cut-offs will be calculated using the confirmed measured route distance.
For full MizMalĀ® competitors, managing their pace after twelve consecutive days of running will be particularly important.
The finish line may be getting closer, but the Bodach won't make things easy!
Every competitor who successfully completes the MTC Bodach will receive a bespoke finisher's medal inspired by this mysterious character from Gaelic folklore.
Special trophies will also recognise the first male and first female finishers.

Wednesday 19th May 2027 | Day 13 of Mount to Coast MizMalĀ®
The Bodach may be an ancient and mysterious character from Gaelic folklore, but there's one opponent that every ultrarunner knows only too well.
THE CLOCK!
The Mount to Coast Bodach takes competitors on a challenging 37.4-mile journey from Ballybofey to Buncrana, with three supported checkpoints along the way.
All competitors must maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph, including time spent at checkpoints.
And with this being the penultimate stage of our fourteen-day MizMalĀ® adventure, every minute counts!
Based on the confirmed route distance of 37.4 miles, the maximum permitted completion time is:
9 HOURS AND 21 MINUTES
This includes all time spent running, walking, eating, drinking and stopping at checkpoints.
The clock does not stop when you do!
| Location | Cumulative Distance | Latest Elapsed Time |
|---|---|---|
| š¢ Start ā Villa Rose Hotel & Spa | 0.0 miles | 00:00 |
| š CP1 ā Rann | 9.7 miles | 02:25:30 |
| š CP2 ā County Donegal | 19.0 miles | 04:45:00 |
| š CP3 ā Callaghan Tyres | 27.9 miles | 06:58:30 |
| š Finish ā Inishowen Gateway Hotel | 37.4 miles | 09:21:00 |
Important: All times are measured from each competitor's official start time. These are the calculated maximum elapsed times at 4 mph. Final checkpoint operating times will be confirmed in the race instructions.
Competitors must reach each checkpoint within the permitted time.
Runners who fall behind the required minimum pace may be withdrawn from the event.
Remember, the 4 mph requirement is an overall average, not simply your running speed between checkpoints.
Time spent refuelling, changing clothing, attending to blisters or enjoying a chat with our checkpoint volunteers all counts towards your total race time.
A sensible pacing strategy and efficient checkpoint stops will help you remain ahead of the clock.
For standalone competitors, completing 37.4 miles within 9 hours and 21 minutes is a significant achievement.
But for our full MizMalĀ® competitors, the challenge is something altogether different.
By Day 13, they'll already have completed twelve consecutive ultramarathons.
Their legs will have covered hundreds of miles.
Their bodies will be tired.
And the temptation to stop for just a few more minutes at each checkpoint may be greater than ever!
But there's an extraordinary reward waiting at Buncrana.
THIRTEEN CONSECUTIVE ULTRAMARATHONS COMPLETED!
Just one more day remains.
One final challenge.
One last journey north to Malin Head.
The old man may have all the time in the world, but our competitors certainly don't!
Keep your stops efficient.
Manage your energy carefully.
And remember that every mile completed brings you closer to the finish line at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel.
For our full MizMalĀ® warriors, this is no time to surrender.
THE ULTIMATE FINISH LINE IS ALMOST WITHIN REACH!
37.4 MILES. 4 MPH MINIMUM. 9 HOURS 21 MINUTES MAXIMUM.
The Bodach may be ancient, but our competitors are proving that determination never grows old.
THIRTEEN DAYS DOWN. ONE TO GO!
Wednesday 19th May 2027 | Day 13 of Mount to Coast MizMalĀ®
The Bodach may be an ancient and mysterious character from Gaelic folklore, but even a supernatural old man would struggle to cover 37.4 miles without something to eat!
Fortunately, our competitors won't need to rely on magic to keep their energy levels topped up.
The Mount to Coast Bodach features three supported checkpoints along the route from Ballybofey to Buncrana, providing opportunities to replenish supplies, refuel and prepare for the miles ahead.
And with the ultimate MizMalĀ® finish line at Malin Head now tantalisingly close, there's every reason to keep those legs moving!
Our checkpoints provide a welcome opportunity to take on food and fluids during the event.
Typical refreshments may include:
The exact selection may vary between checkpoints and will be confirmed in the final race information.
Competitors should carry sufficient food and fluids to remain self-sufficient between checkpoints rather than relying entirely on the refreshments provided.
š CP1 ā RANN | 9.7 MILES
The first opportunity to replenish supplies and assess how the day is progressing.
With almost ten miles completed, the Bodach challenge is well underway.
But there's still plenty of running ahead!
š CP2 ā COUNTY DONEGAL | 19.0 MILES
Just over halfway!
An important opportunity to refuel, top up your hydration and prepare for the next section of the route.
For our full MizMalĀ® competitors, this is another chance to manage the accumulated fatigue of twelve previous ultramarathons.
š CP3 ā CALLAGHAN TYRES | 27.9 MILES
The final checkpoint before Buncrana!
With just 9.5 miles remaining, make sure you have sufficient food and fluids for the last push.
The Bodach is almost defeated.
And for our full MizMalĀ® warriors, the finish line at Malin Head is getting closer by the minute!
In keeping with our commitment to reducing unnecessary waste, competitors must carry their own reusable drinking vessel.
This could be a collapsible cup, water bottle or hydration pack.
Disposable drinking cups will not be supplied at checkpoints.
Please help us protect the beautiful Irish countryside by taking all litter with you and disposing of it responsibly.
Every runner has different nutritional requirements, particularly when tackling an ultramarathon.
Competitors who rely on specific energy gels, electrolyte products, sports drinks or specialist foods should bring their own supplies.
We strongly recommend practising your nutrition and hydration strategy during training.
Race day is not the ideal time to discover that your stomach disagrees with your chosen fuel!
And after twelve consecutive ultramarathons, our full MizMalĀ® competitors will certainly know what works for them.
The MTC Bodach requires competitors to maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph, including checkpoint stops.
That means time spent eating, drinking, changing clothing or chatting at checkpoints counts towards your total race time.
With a measured route distance of 37.4 miles, the maximum completion time is:
9 HOURS AND 21 MINUTES
Our advice?
EAT WELL. DRINK REGULARLY. KEEP YOUR STOPS EFFICIENT.
A few minutes spent refuelling properly can make a tremendous difference later in the race.
But linger too long, and the old man might just get the better of you!
For competitors undertaking the complete fourteen-day MizMalĀ® challenge, good nutrition and hydration are absolutely essential.
By the time they reach the Bodach, their bodies will already have endured twelve consecutive ultramarathons.
Recovery between stages, sensible fuelling and careful hydration will play a vital role in keeping the journey alive.
And there's an extraordinary reward waiting at Buncrana.
THIRTEEN CONSECUTIVE ULTRAMARATHONS COMPLETED!
Just one final day remains.
One last legendary challenge.
And the ultimate finish line at Malin Head.
There are no magical potions waiting at our checkpoints.
Just refreshments, encouragement and the opportunity to prepare for the next stage of your adventure.
For standalone competitors, the MTC Bodach offers 37.4 miles of challenge and achievement.
For our full MizMalĀ® warriors, it's the penultimate step towards something truly extraordinary.

Wednesday 19th May 2027 | Day 13 of Mount to Coast MizMalĀ®
The Bodach may be an ancient and mysterious figure from Gaelic folklore, but even he wouldn't be allowed to bend the rules at a Mount to Coast ultramarathon!
The MTC Bodach is a challenging 37.4-mile ultramarathon from Ballybofey to Buncrana, with 2,136 ft of ascent and three supported checkpoints along the route.
For standalone competitors, it's a demanding endurance challenge through County Donegal.
For our full MizMalĀ® warriors, it's the penultimate stage of an extraordinary fourteen-day adventure across Ireland.
And whether you're running one day or all fourteen, the safety and wellbeing of every competitor remain our highest priority.
Please read the following rules carefully before race day.
All competitors must be physically prepared and suitably trained for the demands of a 37.4-mile ultramarathon.
By entering the event, competitors acknowledge that ultra-distance running involves significant physical and mental challenges.
Every runner is responsible for assessing their own fitness, managing their effort and making sensible decisions throughout the race.
If you become unwell, injured or unable to continue safely, you must inform the event organisers.
YOUR SAFETY IS ALWAYS MORE IMPORTANT THAN A FINISHING TIME OR MEDAL!
All competitors must maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph, including checkpoint stops.
Based on the measured route distance of 37.4 miles, the maximum completion time is:
9 HOURS AND 21 MINUTES
Competitors must also reach the designated checkpoints within the published cut-off times.
Runners who fall behind the required pace may be withdrawn from the event at the organisers' discretion.
Remember, the clock continues running while you're eating, drinking or resting at checkpoints!
The MTC Bodach is a GPS-navigation event.
Competitors must follow the official GPX route supplied by Ultra Running Ltd.
Shortcuts, deliberate deviations or failure to follow the prescribed course are not permitted.
Competitors are responsible for carrying suitable navigation equipment and ensuring they know how to use it.
The official GPX file will be provided approximately four weeks before the event.
FOLLOW THE GPX ā DON'T LET THE BODACH LEAD YOU ASTRAY!
Competitors will be issued with a GPS tracking device for the duration of the race.
The tracker must remain with the competitor throughout the event and must not be deliberately switched off, tampered with or transferred to another person.
The device assists organisers in monitoring competitor progress and includes an SOS function for emergency situations.
All trackers must be returned as instructed by the organisers.
The MTC Bodach has three supported checkpoints:
Competitors must visit all designated checkpoints in the correct order.
Checkpoint marshals and event officials may issue instructions relating to safety, progress or continuation in the event.
These instructions must be followed.
Competitors must carry appropriate equipment for an ultramarathon in potentially changeable Irish weather conditions.
This should include:
A final compulsory kit list, including any additional requirements, will be confirmed in the pre-race instructions.
Sections of the route may involve public roads, junctions and other areas shared with vehicles.
Competitors must obey Irish road traffic laws and exercise particular caution when crossing roads.
Runners must remain alert to approaching traffic and use designated pedestrian facilities where available.
THE ROADS ARE NOT CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT.
No race position or finishing time is worth compromising your safety.
The MTC Bodach passes through the landscapes of County Donegal and towards the Inishowen Peninsula.
Please help us keep these places beautiful.
Littering is strictly prohibited.
All wrappers, gel packets and other waste must be carried to an appropriate disposal point.
Competitors must respect private property, local residents, wildlife and the natural environment.
LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND BUT FOOTPRINTS!
Any competitor wishing to withdraw must inform the event organisers or an authorised race official.
DO NOT SIMPLY LEAVE THE COURSE WITHOUT NOTIFYING THE ORGANISERS.
If you require urgent assistance, use the emergency procedures explained in the pre-race briefing.
In a life-threatening emergency, contact the Irish emergency services on 112 or 999.
The GPS tracker SOS facility is available for genuine emergencies.
A bespoke MTC Bodach finisher's medal will be awarded to competitors who successfully complete the full official route within the permitted time and in accordance with the event rules.
Special trophies will also be awarded to the first male and first female finishers.
For competitors undertaking the complete fourteen-day MizMalĀ® challenge, the Bodach medal represents the thirteenth daily medal in the collection.
And there's still one final legendary challenge to come!
Ultra Running Ltd reserves the right to make decisions necessary for the safe and fair conduct of the event.
This may include modifying the route, adjusting arrangements, withdrawing competitors or stopping the event if circumstances require.
Competitors must comply with reasonable instructions from event officials and marshals.
For standalone competitors, successfully completing the MTC Bodach represents another fantastic ultramarathon achievement.
But for our full MizMalĀ® warriors, reaching the finish line at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel in Buncrana will mean something extraordinary.
Thirteen consecutive ultramarathons completed.
Hundreds of miles covered.
Thirteen legendary characters conquered.
And just one final journey remaining.
MALIN HEAD IS ALMOST WITHIN REACH!
The Bodach may possess mysterious powers in Gaelic folklore, but our competitors have something even more formidable.
COURAGE. ENDURANCE. DETERMINATION.
Follow the route.
Respect the rules.
Look after each other.
And keep moving towards Buncrana!
