MTC CARMAN
18th May 2027

Tuesday 18th May 2027
Twelve days. Twelve legends. One extraordinary journey across Ireland!
Welcome to the Mount to Coast Carman, a challenging 38-mile ultramarathon inspired by one of the most mysterious and formidable figures in Irish mythology.
Carman was no ordinary woman.
An ancient sorceress associated with powerful magic and destruction, she was said to have travelled to Ireland accompanied by her three sons, bringing devastation and misfortune wherever they went.
But even the mighty Carman eventually met her match!
And on Tuesday 18th May 2027, our competitors will face a challenge worthy of her fearsome reputation.
38 miles of determination, endurance and sheer willpower!
For competitors undertaking the complete fourteen-day Mount to Coast MizMal® adventure, Day 12 represents another extraordinary milestone.
Eleven consecutive ultramarathons already completed.
Hundreds of miles conquered.
Tired legs, aching muscles and a determination that simply refuses to surrender.
Now, just three daily races remain, including Carman, before the ultimate finish line at Malin Head.
For standalone competitors, the MTC Carman offers the opportunity to experience the magic of MizMal® in a single unforgettable 38-mile challenge.
With each passing day, our competitors move closer to the northern tip of Ireland.
But Carman isn’t about to make things easy.
She may have wielded powerful magic, but our runners possess something equally formidable.
COURAGE. RESILIENCE. DETERMINATION.
Whether you’re joining us for one day or undertaking the entire fourteen-day adventure, the MTC Carman promises another memorable chapter in the MizMal® story.
38 MILES. ONE POWERFUL SORCERESS. ONE LEGENDARY CHALLENGE!

Long before Ireland's roads echoed to the footsteps of ultrarunners, its ancient landscapes were home to tales of powerful gods, mythical warriors and fearsome supernatural beings.
Among them was Carman, a mysterious sorceress whose name became associated with dark magic, devastation and one of Ireland's great ancient festivals.
Her story is one of extraordinary power, conflict and ultimately defeat.
And she provides the inspiration for Day 12 of the Mount to Coast MizMal® – a 38-mile ultramarathon on Tuesday 18th May 2027.
According to Irish mythology, Carman travelled to Ireland from distant lands accompanied by her three sons:
Dub, Dothur and Dian.
Together, they were said to possess formidable magical abilities.
Carman herself was associated with destructive sorcery, while her sons brought their own supernatural powers to the island.
Their arrival threatened the prosperity and wellbeing of Ireland, and their activities soon attracted the attention of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the legendary supernatural people of ancient Irish tradition.
But Carman and her sons were about to discover that Ireland already had powerful defenders!
The Tuatha Dé Danann confronted Carman and her sons, determined to put an end to the destruction they were causing.
In the legendary encounter, Carman's sons were driven from Ireland, while Carman herself was held captive.
Separated from her children and unable to return home, the once-powerful sorceress eventually died in captivity.
It was a tragic ending for a figure who had once inspired such fear.
Yet her name would endure for centuries.
Carman's story became associated with Óenach Carmain, an important assembly and festival of ancient Ireland.
Traditionally linked with the region of Leinster, the gathering was remembered as an occasion for community, competition, trade and celebration.
And there's something rather fitting about that connection.
After all, competition, determination and the bringing together of people are also at the heart of our own extraordinary MizMal® adventure!
Although the ancient festival and our modern ultramarathon are separated by many centuries, Carman's legend provides a memorable link between Ireland's mythology and the endurance challenges of today.
Our competitors won't need to battle sorcerers or confront the Tuatha Dé Danann.
But they will need something almost magical to complete Day 12 of MizMal®!
For those undertaking the entire fourteen-day event, eleven consecutive ultramarathons will already be behind them.
And after another 38 miles, they'll have completed twelve.
TWELVE CONSECUTIVE ULTRAMARATHONS – JUST TWO MORE DAYS TO GO!
For standalone competitors, the MTC Carman offers a chance to experience a challenging Irish ultramarathon inspired by a remarkable ancient legend.
Carman may have wielded powerful magic, but there's one thing even the greatest sorceress cannot conjure.
The determination required to keep moving when every muscle is telling you to stop.
That comes from within.
And it's exactly what makes ultrarunners such extraordinary people.
38 MILES. ONE ANCIENT SORCERESS. ONE UNFORGETTABLE CHALLENGE.

Tuesday 18th May 2027 | Day 12 of Mount to Coast MizMal®
Carman may have possessed powerful magical abilities, but our competitors won't need a crystal ball to find their way to the finish line!
The Mount to Coast Carman covers 38.3 miles from Rolling Wave Guesthouse in Bundoran to Villa Rose Hotel & Spa in Ballybofey, travelling through the landscapes of County Donegal.
With three supported checkpoints along the route, accurate navigation, sensible pacing and careful preparation will be essential.
And for our full MizMal® competitors, this will be their twelfth consecutive ultramarathon!
Competitors will be provided with the official MTC Carman GPX route file approximately four weeks before the event.
The GPX file can be downloaded onto a compatible GPS watch, handheld navigation device or smartphone application.
All competitors are responsible for familiarising themselves with the route and ensuring their chosen navigation equipment is suitable for the challenge.
Please note: Competitors must follow the official GPX route rather than simply navigating between checkpoints.
The route may include roads and other sections where careful navigation and attention to surrounding traffic are essential.
Competitors will be provided with a GPS tracking device for use during the event.
This allows the event organisers to monitor progress along the route and provides an additional level of safety throughout the race.
Live tracking will also allow friends, family and supporters to follow competitors as they make their way towards Ballybofey.
Tracking information and access details will be provided before the event.
GPS trackers are equipped with an SOS facility for emergency situations.
Competitors will receive instructions on how to use this facility before the race.
The SOS function should only be activated when genuine emergency assistance is required.

Competitors must maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph, including time spent at checkpoints.
Based on the confirmed route distance of 38.3 miles, the maximum completion time is 9 hours, 34 minutes and 30 seconds.

For standalone competitors, the MTC Carman offers 38.3 miles of adventure through County Donegal.
For our full MizMal® competitors, successfully reaching Ballybofey means completing an extraordinary twelfth consecutive ultramarathon.
And with only two days remaining after Carman, the ultimate finish at Malin Head is now tantalisingly close!
Carman may have possessed powerful magic, but our competitors have something even more valuable.
THE DETERMINATION TO KEEP GOING!
38.3 MILES. THREE CHECKPOINTS. ONE FINISH LINE.

Tuesday 18th May 2027 | Day 12 of Mount to Coast MizMal®
Carman was a powerful sorceress whose magic was feared throughout ancient Ireland.
But on Day 12 of MizMal®, our competitors face an opponent that even the greatest sorceress couldn't control.
TIME!
With 38.3 miles separating the start at Rolling Wave Guesthouse in Bundoran from the finish at Villa Rose Hotel & Spa in Ballybofey, competitors must maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph.
And remember, that includes every minute spent at checkpoints!
The MTC Carman has a calculated maximum completion time of 9 hours, 34 minutes and 30 seconds.
This is based on the measured route distance of 38.3 miles at the required minimum average speed of 4 mph.
Checkpoint stops, food breaks and any other delays must be included within this time.
| Location | Cumulative Distance | Latest Elapsed Time |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 Start – Rolling Wave Guesthouse | 0.0 miles | 00:00 |
| 💚 CP1 – Ardeelan Lower | 9.8 miles | 02:27 |
| 💚 CP2 – Drumgowan | 19.2 miles | 04:48 |
| 💚 CP3 – Tawnawully Mountains | 29.1 miles | 07:16:30 |
| 🏁 Finish – Villa Rose Hotel & Spa | 38.3 miles | 09:34:30 |
Important: All times are measured from each competitor's official start time. These are the calculated maximum elapsed times at 4 mph. Final checkpoint operating times will be confirmed in the race instructions.
Competitors must reach each checkpoint within the permitted time.
Those falling behind the required minimum pace may be withdrawn from the event.
Remember, the 4 mph requirement is an overall average, not simply your running speed between checkpoints.
For example, spending 15 minutes at a checkpoint means you'll need to make up that time while moving.
A sensible pacing strategy, efficient checkpoint stops and good nutrition will all help you stay ahead of the clock.
For standalone competitors, completing 38.3 miles within 9 hours, 34 minutes and 30 seconds is a significant achievement.
For our full MizMal® competitors, the challenge is even greater.
By Day 12, they'll already have eleven consecutive ultramarathons in their legs.
Fatigue will have accumulated.
Every hill may feel steeper.
And every minute spent standing still becomes more precious.
But successfully reaching Ballybofey means something extraordinary.
TWELVE CONSECUTIVE ULTRAMARATHONS COMPLETED – JUST TWO MORE TO GO!
There's no magic shortcut to the finish line.
And there's no escaping the cut-off times!
Plan your race, manage your effort and keep moving towards Ballybofey.
38.3 MILES. 4 MPH MINIMUM. 9 HOURS 34 MINUTES 30 SECONDS MAXIMUM.
Tuesday 18th May 2027 | Day 12 of Mount to Coast MizMal®
Carman may have possessed extraordinary magical powers, but there's one thing even the most powerful sorceress couldn't conjure up.
The energy to run 38.3 miles without eating!
Fortunately, our competitors won't need to rely on magic to keep themselves going.
The Mount to Coast Carman features three supported checkpoints along the route from Bundoran to Ballybofey, providing opportunities to replenish supplies, refuel and prepare for the miles ahead.
And with the clock ticking, a little forward planning will go a long way!
Our checkpoints are intended to provide a welcome opportunity to refuel during the event.
Typical refreshments may include:
The exact selection may vary between checkpoints and will be confirmed in the final race information.
Competitors should carry sufficient food and fluids to remain self-sufficient between checkpoints, rather than relying entirely on the refreshments provided.
💚 CP1 – ARDEELAN LOWER | 9.8 MILES
The first opportunity to top up your supplies and take stock of how the day is progressing.
With almost ten miles completed, there's still plenty of running ahead.
💚 CP2 – DRUMGOWAN | 19.2 MILES
Just over halfway!
A good opportunity to refuel, check your hydration and prepare for the next section of the route.
For full MizMal® competitors, this is another chance to manage the accumulated fatigue of twelve consecutive days of running.
💚 CP3 – TAWNAWULLY MOUNTAINS | 29.1 MILES
The final checkpoint before Ballybofey.
With just 9.2 miles remaining, make sure you have sufficient food and fluids for the last push.
The sorceress is almost defeated!
In keeping with our commitment to reducing unnecessary waste, competitors must carry their own reusable drinking vessel.
This could be a collapsible cup, water bottle or hydration pack.
Disposable drinking cups will not be supplied at checkpoints.
Please help us protect the beautiful Irish countryside by taking all litter with you and disposing of it responsibly.
Every runner has different nutritional requirements, particularly when tackling an ultramarathon.
Competitors who rely on specific energy gels, electrolyte products, sports drinks or specialist foods should bring their own supplies.
We strongly recommend practising your nutrition and hydration strategy during training.
Race day is not the ideal time to discover that your stomach disagrees with your chosen fuel!
The MTC Carman requires competitors to maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph, including checkpoint stops.
That means time spent eating, drinking, changing clothing or chatting at checkpoints counts towards your total race time.
Our advice?
Eat well. Drink regularly. Keep your stops efficient.
A few minutes spent refuelling properly can make a tremendous difference later in the race.
But linger too long, and Carman might just cast a spell on your finishing time!
For competitors undertaking the complete fourteen-day MizMal® challenge, good nutrition and hydration are absolutely essential.
By the time they reach Carman, their bodies will already have endured eleven consecutive ultramarathons.
Recovery between stages, sensible fuelling and careful hydration will play a vital role in keeping the journey alive.
With just two days remaining after Carman, every calorie counts!
There are no magic potions waiting at our checkpoints.
Just refreshments, encouragement and the opportunity to prepare for the next stage of your adventure.

Carman was a formidable figure in Irish mythology, renowned for her powerful sorcery and determination to impose her will upon ancient Ireland.
Fortunately, our competitors won't have to contend with magical spells during the Mount to Coast Carman.
But they will have to follow a few important rules!
The MTC Carman is a challenging 38.3-mile ultramarathon from Bundoran to Ballybofey, and the safety and wellbeing of every competitor is our highest priority.
Please read the following information carefully before race day.
All competitors must be physically prepared and suitably trained for the demands of a 38.3-mile ultramarathon.
By entering the event, competitors acknowledge that ultra-distance running involves significant physical and mental challenges.
Every runner is responsible for assessing their own fitness, managing their effort and making sensible decisions throughout the race.
If you become unwell, injured or unable to continue safely, you must inform the event organisers.
Your safety is always more important than a finishing time or medal.
All competitors must maintain a minimum overall average speed of 4 mph, including checkpoint stops.
Based on the measured route distance of 38.3 miles, the calculated maximum completion time is:
9 HOURS, 34 MINUTES AND 30 SECONDS

Competitors are responsible for carrying suitable navigation equipment and ensuring they know how to use it.
The official GPX file will be provided approximately four weeks before the event.
Competitors will be issued with a GPS tracking device for the duration of the race.
The tracker must remain with the competitor throughout the event and must not be deliberately switched off, tampered with or transferred to another person.
The device assists organisers in monitoring competitor progress and includes an SOS function for emergency situations.
All trackers must be returned as instructed by the organisers.
The MTC Carman has three supported checkpoints:
Competitors must visit all designated checkpoints in the correct order.
Checkpoint marshals and event officials may issue instructions relating to safety, progress or continuation in the event.
These instructions must be followed.
Competitors must carry appropriate equipment for an ultramarathon in potentially changeable Irish weather conditions.
This should include:
A final compulsory kit list, including any additional requirements, will be confirmed in the pre-race instructions.
Sections of the route may involve public roads, junctions and other areas shared with vehicles.
Competitors must obey Irish road traffic laws and exercise particular caution when crossing roads.
Runners must remain alert to approaching traffic and use designated pedestrian facilities where available.
The roads are not closed for this event.
